We just got back from almost a month’s vacation in the U.S., staring in Oregon with my brother Kris’ family and moving on to California, Louisiana and Seattle, Washington. Many non-Kyoto-related pictures will be posted here and on the flickr page: http://flickr.com/photos/kyoto/

Oh, man, did we get everything and more in Louisiana: crawfish, gumbo, jambalaya and lots of stuff that isn’t even mentioned in that song, like heavenly pecan pie and fried catfish and po’ boys and fried chicken…and that’s just the food. We went to New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival and it was a thrill. Greg was so excited by the music he literally danced down Bourbon Street back to the hotel as evening fell and the nightlife started to bloom. Above are pictures of the Crawfish party that Grandmama Margaret and Granddaddy Leo laid out.

Manshu-in fireThere was a forest fire yesterday climbing up the mountainside above us, but the fire department managed to get it under control within a couple hours. It seemed to be coming from Manshu-in Temple, which would be a great tragedy, but a gentleman coming down the hill later in the evening told me it started at a maintenance building for a nearby graveyard and spread to the forest. It got bigger and looked as though it was going to burn out of control, but somehow the fire department managed to get up there and attack it.  In my hometown in Southern California, where it rains so seldom and the hillsides are so dry and brown, we are accustomed to such fires lasting for days and devastating thousands of acres of brushland.

I probably should have posted this a while ago…

Kurama Fire Festival (6 min, 37 MB Quicktime)

kuramafirefest_t.jpgThe Kurama Himatsuri, or Fire Festival, is held every October in a tiny mountain village in northern Kyoto. Progressively larger torches are paraded up and down this one-street town by teams in traditional costume, as a thumping taiko beat stokes the enthusiasm. Finally, fulfilling the ancient prophesy, Bobby Valentine is mystically conjured out of the sparks and smoke.

Greg put out milk and cookies on Christmas Eve, counting out exactly six cookies, and some sleighbells were heard after going to bed. In the morning he was able to confirm conclusively that Santa had indeed visited during the night.
