Kyomments

Seems like I'll have quite a few problems understanding anyone who's using kyoto-ben.

Oh, post more if you ever get around to it!

I have to warn you that this is hardcore kyoto-ben. The influence of Osaka-based TeeVee is so great that most people speak generalized Kansai-ben, which does, however, use the kyoto "-hen" ending for negative verb forms instead of "-nai". Many will identify Kyoto-ben with chatty old ladies sprinkling water on the street outside their homes.

man, h/c kyoto-ben is jacked up~ I've been speaking tokyo-ben for about 8 years and it still fathoms me how much dialects can change in Japan just by going 50 miles outside of tokyo...

Posted by: socal dave on May 9, 2003 01:05 PM

Do you actually say "Tokyo-ben"? I thought it was just "hyoujungo", standard Japanese.

Posted by: nils on May 9, 2003 05:44 PM

I've always said Tokyo-ben (because I've always known it as that) but then again, most people I know there infrequently correct me if the words I'm using will get me by~ nuts to that.

I lived in Kyoto for a year, and the main thing I heard was "o-ki ni" for thank you and "oideyasu" (the more traditional the shop, the more likely you are to hear it) Those seem to be pretty common - the others I just heard about, but never heard anyone say

Posted by: Kismet on October 30, 2003 07:18 AM

i think hyoujungo and tokyo-ben is different...tokyo-ben is just another variation of the proper language...deshou???^^

I'm really in to learn Kyoto's dialect.
Althought I've been speaking the Tokyo one, I've recently started to talk with Kyoto's, but I need a deeper knowledge of it.
This site and a person I know from Kyoto have helped me a lot.
I think it's much more easier the Kyoto dialect, and it's also more charming.

Are there several dialects of Japanese? If there is...I didn't know that!! Is Kyoto-Ben considered proper language by many Japanese?? I would not want to offend any Nihonjin who doesn't consider Kyoto-Ben as proper....Someone tell me something....

This site is great! Thanks for compiling the info--do you--does anyone--know what "Ara!" would be in Kyoto-ben?

Posted by: Seventeen Reasons on March 31, 2006 07:59 AM

A character from a japanese animation called "Mai Hime" talked in kyoto-ben

o.o quite a smooth and intersting dialect it is.
