Our kitchen window.
You must be thrilled to get updates on my geckos, but anyway this baby appeared this week for the first time. You may have seen the picture of Carla with eggs showing that I posted a while back. The size of the large star etched in the window glass serves as a good size reference.
I suppose this is her offspring, at least her second pregnancy (previously Carl Jr was born, and he spends much time hunting on our window), and there clearly are two eggs visible in the previous pic, so there must be another somewhere. It's funny, they all have different habits, ways of walking, moving, hunting. Even a simple reptile, it's brain hard wired with basic routines for survival, has variations.
Posted by nils at September 24, 2003 10:18 PMdo the geckos ever end up inside your house? also, do you have any pictures of where you live? i have always been curious about what an apartment [or similar] would look like in kyoto.. i know that in tokyo it's not much different from here [in NYC] but kyoto seems to be very "old-world" style :) thanks for your blog. i really enjoy it.. i'm a big japan fan in everyway.
Posted by: stephanie on September 27, 2003 03:36 AMWe see the geckos sunning on the balcony and crawling on the beams, but they don't come inside, because they know the insects gather on the OUTSIDE of the window after dark when the light is on inside. It's their hunting ground.
I used to have a virtual tour of my neighborhood, but my wife made me take it down, privacy.
Tokyo and kyoto both have modern ferroconcrete condos (ours are just not so tall), and modern and traditional houses and apartments. Kyoto is not a quaint museum, it's one of Japan's most cosmopolitan cities, home of some leading hi-tech companies.
The most Kyoto-esque form of housing is the machiya
Posted by: nils on September 27, 2003 09:14 AMah! thanks for the info.. i know that a good deal of kyoto's architecture was spared during WWII so i was wondering what housing looked like in that city.. understood about the virtual tour. it's hard knowing where to draw the line with photos and blogging.
