Is that the "Silver Temple"
Posted by: tom on December 2, 2004 04:36 AMThat's right, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, although Death stepped in and prevented him (Yoshimasa) from finishing the job and having it clad in silver-leaf, as his grandfather Yoshimitsu did with Kinkaku-ji (the so-called Gold Pavilion). Kin means gold, gin means silver, by the way. Kinkaku-ji's official name is Rokuon-ji and Ginkaku-ji is Jisho-ji.
Starting a day's tour with Ginkaku-ji is a good idea because just outside the front gate is the northern end of the Tetsugaku-no-michi, the Path of Philosophy, a canal-side path that will lead you down closer to Nanzen-ji and the other sights of Higashiyama.
