季節外れ? Looks like she is wearing a kimono with a winter pattern.

Do kimonos have seasonal patterns?
Is that a maiko or a Geisha? How do I tell the difference?

Posted by: saffronsaris on August 23, 2005 09:33 AM

Looks like she is wearing a kimono with a winter pattern.
I thought that too at first, but Yoshiko points out it's a raincoat over her kimono (can't see the obi).

the amount of red on the collar would suggest that she is maiko???

can someone conform this?

Posted by: roddie on August 24, 2005 10:09 PM

The collar is red with a moderate amount of white, and her makeup doesn't go all the way to the hairline, so I would guess she's a higher ranking maiko.

Ah, so that's what her outer garment is--a raincoat. I was baffled at first because she looked like she was wearing uchikake! :) Another lovely maiko. Thanks!

The umbrella 傘 should have been a dead giveaway that what we see in the pix is an outer, protective garment. Still puzzled by the design, I would expect to see such around December,January, Feb, rather than August....

I've recently become very much interested in maiko/geisha. This picture captures a more relaxed shot. Are there still a good many geiko in Kyoto? Any information that's recent on them would greatly be appreciated. Please email if you have any.
