The very fragrant Jinchoge (Daphne flower) has just come into bloom with its sweet-and-spicy-smelling blossoms. The sakura buds are getting ready to burst sometime this week.

Going home on the Kyoto Karasuma subway the other day, my weary eyes drifted upward on the wall opposite and were met by the pensive gaze of Mr. Richard Gere afloat on a sea of serenity, advertising for a chain of men's beauty salons called Dandy House. (Click for print and TV ads).
Then, last night, I saw a TV commercial with Gere cruising in an old convertible, with Danny Boy/Londonderry Air playing wistfully in the background. Voiceover (my unpolished translation): "Surely, a man's most important treasures are his ideals. Because you have ideals, Dandy House." Guy looks pretty good, though.
I suggest some night next week at Tadg's Pub at Shijo-Kawabata in Kyoto, near Hankyu Kawaramachi and Keihan Shijo stations, and a short walk away from Maruyama Park for nighttime cherry blossom viewing. Alternatives welcome.
Students have erected a makeshift cafe above the street at Hyakumanben (the main intersection at Kyoto University). There's a kotatsu, bookshelves, and apparently a pot for making coffee. おしゃれ〜!

"Some areas of the •••.com site show incorrect layout using my standard browser, Netscape 4.7. It may be important to make this more accessible in the very near future, since people are beginning to look at (the site). I note that it works perfectly with Internet Explorer (2002 version) but not everyone will have this."
This reminds me that last year, when I was editing a paper introducing a new online database for the Human Genome Project, all the screenshots provided by the developers showed that they were using Netscape 4.7.
That's right, the Human Genome Project database lookup is optimized for Netscape 4.7.
Since about November Greg has been able to stand without holding onto anything, and for some weeks he's taken one or two little steps before dropping down to crawl. But last weekend he started really swinging his hips forward and striding across the room, sort of like a swaggering cowboy bellying up to the bar for a shot of Redeye. The whole left side of his body goes forward, then the whole right side. It thrills us to pieces, and so from our reaction he's pretty much gotten the idea that he's hot stuff, and therefore he grins with great self-satisfaction when he's walking. This new mobility of course also means that he has access to just about anything, so we have to raise our watchful vigilance another notch.
